Sperryville Gets a Free Monthly Art Series This Summer

Weekend visitors to Sperryville already know the River District as one of the most walkable, creative pockets in the Virginia piedmont. This summer, it gets even better: The Marketplace is launching The Collective Canvas, a free monthly series of interactive art workshops and artist demonstrations hosted at the Confluence Gallery inside the venue.

The series runs every second Saturday from 2–4pm, June through November 2026 — six sessions in all, each featuring a different local or regional artist sharing their process with visitors. No ticket required, no experience needed.

What to Expect at The Collective Canvas

Each session is designed to be interactive, not just observational. Rotating local and regional artists lead demonstrations and hands-on creative activities, making this a strong option for curious visitors who want something more engaging than a passive gallery walk. The format is community-focused — think of it as an open studio meet-up with a different host each month.

The series is free and open to the public. Given the intimate nature of the Confluence Gallery space, arriving closer to the 2pm start time is a good idea, especially as the series builds word-of-mouth through the summer.

The June 14 kickoff session doubles as a Meet the Artist event for Sam Grantham, whose exhibition 'The Spirit Moved Me' is currently on display at the Confluence Gallery through June 2026. Grantham's work centers on vibrant personality portraits — figures rendered with expressive energy that makes each painting feel like an introduction rather than a record.

The show itself is free to view during regular Marketplace hours, and the June 14 session gives visitors the rare chance to hear directly from Grantham about his practice and the work on the walls. It's the kind of event that's genuinely hard to replicate outside of a community-scaled art scene like Sperryville's.
