Sperryville Has a Full Summer of Free Events — And Most Visitors Don't Know About Them

If you're planning a weekend trip to Rappahannock County this summer, here's something worth building your itinerary around: Sperryville's River District is running two distinct free event series from now through November — Thursday evening concerts and monthly art workshops — plus an ongoing gallery exhibition that's free to visit any time The Marketplace is open.

None of these require reservations. None charge admission. And all of them are within easy walking distance of each other in Sperryville's compact, walkable River District along the Hughes River.

Thursday Evenings: Sperryville Summer Concert Series at River District Arts

Now in its sixth season, the Sperryville Summer Concert Series takes place at River District Arts — the historic 1930s apple packing facility at 7 River Lane that has become the cultural heart of the town. The series kicked off on May 21 with Rebecca Porter, who performed a fusion of honky-tonk and Shenandoah roots music to open the season.

The format is simple and welcoming:

Gates and food trucks open at 5pm
Music runs 6–8pm
Admission is free

The food truck component means you can make a full evening of it — arrive early, grab dinner from whatever trucks are parked outside, and settle in before the music starts. It's the kind of low-key summer evening that the DC metro crowd drives two hours to find.

Second Saturdays: The Collective Canvas Art Workshops at The Marketplace

Starting in June and running through November, The Confluence Gallery at The Marketplace is hosting a new free monthly series called The Collective Canvas. Sessions run 2–4pm on the second Saturday of each month, with a different local or regional artist featured each time.

The format is interactive — each session combines hands-on creative community workshops with artist demonstrations, giving attendees a chance to actually make something alongside the featured artist, not just watch. It's designed for all skill levels.

The inaugural session is Saturday, June 14, and it doubles as the Meet the Artist event for Sam Grantham's current exhibition, 'The Spirit Moved Me.' Grantham's show — featuring vibrant, expressive personality portraits — is on display at The Confluence Gallery through June 2026 and is free to view during Marketplace hours.

The work is described as vibrant and personality-driven — the kind of figurative art that holds up to time spent in front of it. The show is free to view, and the June 14 Meet the Artist session (2–4pm) is your best chance to hear directly from Grantham about the work.

The Thursday concert series and the Second Saturday workshops don't overlap, which makes them easy to combine into a single Sperryville weekend:

Getting There

Sperryville sits at the eastern gateway of Shenandoah National Park, about 75 miles from Washington, DC via US-211 West. The River District is walkable once you arrive — parking is available along River Lane and Main Street.
