A Shaped Day

Wine Roads: the Sperryville–Washington loop

The estate Cab Franc under Old Rag, a Tuscan deck outside Little Washington, and a stroll into a three-Michelin-star village — no rushing, the roads are the point.

Year-round; October is the sweet spot — Sharp Rock runs extended Thu–Mon hours in leaf season.

Two villages, a handful of family vineyards, and the mountain that names half of them. This is a slow day — a late-morning tasting under Old Rag, lunch in Sperryville, an afternoon on a Tuscan deck, and a stroll through Little Washington before dinner. No rushing; the roads are the point.

The day

Morning · 11:00 AM

Sharp Rock Vineyards

5 Sharp Rock Rd, Sperryville, VA

Taste on the back upper porch.

The renovated-barn tasting room opens to a porch with a panoramic view of Old Rag across the Hughes River.

Get this

Get the “Old Rag” red.

A smooth blend of three Bordeaux reds with some Nebbiolo — rich oak-and-cherry, named for the mountain you're looking at.

Insider tip

Come Friday–Sunday; October is the sweet spot.

Open Fri–Sun (plus Monday holidays) 11–5, with extended Thu–Mon hours in October leaf season.

Five minutes back down Sharp Rock Rd into the village — keep it easy after a late-morning tasting. (~5 min)

Good aperitif stop, not a reliable lunch anchor — hours need confirmation.

Or, for something special

Three Blacksmiths20 Main St, Sperryville, VA

Reservations-only, tasting-menu-scale — better slotted as the evening crown than a midday stop.

Head east toward Washington; you'll hit Gadino's Tuscan deck in the best afternoon light.

Afternoon · 3:00 PM

Gadino Cellars

92 School House Rd, Washington, VA

Sit on the deck for the Blue Ridge view.

A modern Tuscan tasting room with a sun deck over the vineyard rows and the mountains beyond.

Get this

Lean into the Italian varietals — the Pinot Grigio or the Nebbiolo.

The Gadinos make Italian grapes as a nod to their heritage; those are the pours that make the room distinct.

Wind down the tasting with a stroll through town before dinner — galleries are open till five. (short drive into the village)

Afternoon · 4:30 PM

A walk through Little Washington

Main St & Gay St, Washington, VA

Park once and walk the village.

Main and Gay Streets are the whole town — about ten minutes end to end. Gay Street Gallery shows Rappahannock and regional painters, sculpture, and pottery (Fri–Sun 10–5); R.H. Ballard is a few doors down.

You're already in the village; dinner is a short walk, not another drive. (on foot)

Evening · 6:30 PM · Optional
