October 17: RAPPtoberfest

RAPPtoberfest is the annual Oktoberfest celebration organized by Wakefield Country Day School, with authentic German food and beverages, live music, and an antique car show. Between the Weekends: Liquid Autumn in Washington

The verified menu update is the one that matters for a thoughtful fall itinerary. Patty O's Cafe & Bakery, the French and Americana-inspired cafe and blue-ribbon bakery by Chef Patrick O'Connell, has brought back his Apple-Rutabaga Soup for the season. The cafe's own Instagram post, from October 12, says autumn has arrived in Little Washington when it makes its annual appearance, and describes it as a seasonal tradition at The Inn at Little Washington for more than three decades. The rutabaga, sometimes called "the forgotten vegetable," is finished with a splash of maple, per the venue's posting.

The soup is listed through November 2, which means you can pair it with either weekend. The cafe's offerings also include pastries, baguettes, croissants, sandwiches and café beverages, so it works as a breakfast stop as well as a lunch one.

November 1: The RAAC Fall Art Tour

The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community describes its Fall Art Tour as a premier self-guided tour featuring more than 80 artists and more than 30 studios and galleries. Visitors can see paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, jewelry and woodworks, and meet the artists. Because it is self-guided, you set the pace: choose a handful of studios rather than trying to cover them all. The soup's final days fall right on this weekend, so a Washington lunch on the way in or out is a sensible anchor.

A Sperryville Pause

If your route takes you through Sperryville, Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works is a small-batch brewery in a B&B cellar with a beer garden and unfiltered beers. Its listed offerings include a blonde ale, saison, pale ale, amber ale and porter, plus growlers and 22oz bottles. It is listed open Thursday and Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and closed Monday through Wednesday.
